Chapter 12

Tuesday morning, Derek could hardly concentrate on the contract in front of him. He would be accompanying Alexis to her ultrasound appointment in a couple hours and had opted to work from home. He had no idea what to expect and it unnerved him. After another twenty minutes, he gave up and went to stand on his deck. He’d been more than a little shocked to find out she’d been engaged, and even more so about the miscarriage. The fact that her punk-ass ex had left her to deal with the pregnancy incensed him all over again. No, Derek didn’t know the first thing about babies or being a father, but he’d learn. He wouldn’t turn his back on his responsibility.

He sat out there for another half hour before he changed clothes, then went to pick up Alexis. Her appointment wasn’t until eleven thirty, but they had to drive to LA and the traffic didn’t care about the time of day.

She met him at the door with a pensive look on her face. “Hey.”

“Hey. You worried?”

Alexis gave him a nervous smile. “A little.”

Derek gathered her in his embrace and kissed her forehead. “Everything is going to be fine.” She buried her face in his shoulder and held him tight. He ran a comforting hand up and down her back. “I’ll be right there with you.”

“I know.” She released him and leaned up to kiss his cheek. “Thank you, Derek.”

Her soft smile made his heart leap. “Let’s go.”

Alexis didn’t talk much during the drive and he didn’t offer conversation. He could feel her anxiety. Wanting to give her the same kind of assurance she had tried to do with him last Friday, Derek covered her hand with his. He kept it there for the rest of the way.

Inside the imaging center, he found two chairs on the far side of the crowded room and indicated that he would save them while she stood in line to check in.

Alexis joined him a few minutes later, holding a clipboard with several pieces of paper attached. “Good grief. Now I know why they have you come thirty minutes before your actual appointment time. They ask just about everything except the color of your shoes. This would’ve been so much easier if the ultrasound machine in my doctor’s office was working.”

Derek chuckled. “I’m glad it’s not me.”

She rolled her eyes and continued to fill out the sheets. When she finished, she took them back to the desk. They waited another fifteen minutes before the technician called her back. The woman handed Alexis a gown and directed her to an area to change.

“Sir, you can wait right here.”

There were only three people waiting in the small area—a couple and a very pregnant woman. He hadn’t thought about how Alexis would look in a few months. Would she be moving as slowly as the woman, who eased out of the chair to follow another technician? It turned out to be another waiting game, and by the time they entered the ultrasound room, Derek was damn near hyperventilating.
